COARSE PERLITE
Key Characteristics
- Composition: Like all perlite, it is derived from naturally occurring volcanic glass (obsidian) that has been heated to high temperatures (around 1600°F or 871°C), causing trapped water to vaporize and the material to “pop” into lightweight, porous white granules.
- Particle Size: The “coarse” grade features larger, more irregular particles compared to medium or fine grades. The specific size can vary by manufacturer, but it is generally the largest or “super coarse” option available.
- Porosity & Drainage: The larger particles create more significant air pockets and free porosity within the soil, allowing excess water to drain away quickly and ensuring oxygen reaches plant roots effectively.
- Water Retention: Coarse perlite holds less water than finer grades due to less overall surface area and fewer interspatial gaps when mixed in.
Primary Uses:
- Coarse perlite is particularly useful for plants that are sensitive to overwatering or prone to root rot.
Common applications include:
- Cacti and Succulent Mixes: Its high drainage is ideal for these drought-tolerant plants.
- Orchid Substrates: Orchids require a very airy root environment, which coarse perlite helps provide.
- Large Potted Plants: It helps prevent soil compaction in large containers, ensuring stability and adequate airflow for bigger root systems.
- Hydroponics: It can be used as a standalone growing medium in hydroponic systems due to its structure and inert nature.
