PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter

Measure the Light Your Plants Actually Use

Getting the right light intensity is essential for indoor growing.

The PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter gives growers a practical way to measure photosynthetically active radiation across the plant canopy. It measures light in the 400–700 nm PAR range and displays readings as PPFD.

Instead of estimating light levels, you can measure them directly. This makes it easier to adjust fixture height, dimming, and canopy coverage.

The meter works with LED, HPS, and other horticultural lighting systems. It suits home growers, greenhouses, propagation areas, and commercial facilities. (Photobio)

What Is a Quantum PAR Meter?

A PAR meter measures light within the wavelengths plants use for photosynthesis.

PAR stands for Photosynthetically Active Radiation. This range covers approximately 400–700 nanometers.

The PHOTOBIO meter measures the amount of usable light reaching the plant canopy. The result appears as PPFD, measured in micromoles per square meter per second (µmol/m²/s).

This gives you useful information about the actual light reaching your plants.

Why Measure PPFD?

Two grow rooms can use the same light fixture and still produce different results.

Fixture height, mounting position, reflective surfaces, plant size, and canopy shape can all affect light levels.

Therefore, checking the canopy with a PAR meter can help identify uneven coverage.

You can also take measurements at several points across the growing area. Comparing those readings shows where light intensity changes.

This makes it easier to fine-tune your lighting setup.

Adjust Your Grow Lights With Confidence

The PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter can help you evaluate changes to your lighting system.

For example, you can take readings before and after:

  • Raising or lowering a fixture
  • Changing a dimmer setting
  • Repositioning a grow light
  • Adding supplemental lighting
  • Changing canopy height
  • Adjusting light coverage
  • Installing a new LED fixture

The meter can store up to 99 measurements. As a result, you can compare readings while making adjustments throughout the growing cycle. (Photobio)

Ideal for LED Grow Lights

Modern LED fixtures can produce very different light levels even when their wattage looks similar.

That makes actual measurement especially useful.

The PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter works with modern LED fixtures, supplemental lighting, HPS DE grow lights, and traditional indoor grow lighting. (Photobio)

For example, you can use it with the LED G3 Series 320W or the LED G3 Series 650W to check light intensity at different points across the canopy.

You can also use it when setting up Jon’s Plant Factory Full Spectrum LED Strip Lights for propagation and indoor gardening.

Remote Quantum Sensor

The included sensor connects to the main handheld unit using the supplied cables.

This lets you place the sensor directly where you want to measure light.

The package includes both a short coiled cable and a 12-foot straight cable. Therefore, you can take measurements in compact grow spaces or larger installations without moving the main display unit. (Photobio)

The sensor also includes a 1/4-inch mounting point, allowing tripod or compatible mount use. (Manuals+)

Simple Light Mapping

One of the most useful applications is mapping light across your canopy.

Take readings at several positions, such as:

  • Centre of the canopy
  • Front edge
  • Back edge
  • Left side
  • Right side
  • Corners

Then compare the measurements.

This process can reveal areas receiving significantly more or less light. You can then reposition the fixture or adjust the installation to improve consistency.

For larger gardens, repeat measurements whenever you change the lighting layout.

Suitable for Different Growing Environments

The PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter works well in many horticultural settings.

Grow Tents

Check light levels at canopy height and compare different areas of the tent.

Greenhouses

Measure natural or supplemental lighting throughout the growing area.

Propagation Areas

Check lighting over seedlings, clones, and young plants.

Indoor Gardens

Use the meter when setting up shelves, racks, rooms, or dedicated grow areas.

Commercial Growing

Store readings and use them when checking multiple areas or lighting configurations.

PHOTOBIO specifically lists grow tents, greenhouses, and commercial growing applications among its intended uses. (Photobio)

PHOTOBIO Advanced Quantum PAR Meter vs. a Standard Light Meter

A standard light meter measures light based on human visual perception.

A quantum PAR meter instead focuses on the 400–700 nm range used for photosynthetic activity.

That makes PAR measurements more useful when evaluating horticultural lighting.

For serious indoor growing, measuring PPFD provides information that ordinary room-light measurements cannot provide.

How to Use the PHOTOBIO PAR Meter

  1. Connect the remote sensor to the main unit.
  2. Install the two AAA batteries.
  3. Turn on the meter.
  4. Place the sensor at the desired measurement location.
  5. Record the displayed PPFD value.
  6. Move the sensor to additional locations.
  7. Compare readings across the canopy.
  8. Adjust your lighting if necessary.
  9. Recheck the area after making changes.
  10. Store useful measurements for future reference.

Always follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions when using the meter.

Pair It With the Right Grow Lighting

Accurate measurements become even more useful when combined with adjustable lighting.

For example, you can measure your existing setup and then make controlled changes to fixture height or dimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a PAR meter measure?

A PAR meter measures photosynthetically active radiation within the 400–700 nm range. The PHOTOBIO displays the measurement as PPFD. (Photobio)

What is PPFD?

PPFD stands for Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density. It describes the amount of photosynthetically active light reaching a specific surface area.

Can I use this meter with LED grow lights?

Yes. PHOTOBIO states that the meter works with modern LED fixtures, including sole-source and supplemental LED lighting. (Photobio)

Can it measure HPS lighting?

Yes. The manufacturer lists HPS DE grow lights among compatible light sources. (Photobio)

How many readings can the meter store?

The meter can store up to 99 measurements. (Photobio)

Does it come with batteries?

Yes. Two AAA batteries are included. (Manuals+)

Does it include a carrying case?

Yes. A protective carrying case is included with the meter. (Photobio)

Why should I measure light at the canopy?

The light reaching the top of the plant can differ from the light reaching lower or outer areas of the canopy. Measuring at plant level gives you more useful information about actual growing conditions.
