Mosquito dunks are small, donut-shaped cakes used to control mosquito populations. They contain a naturally occurring soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). Which is only toxic specifically to the digestive systems of mosquito, fungus gnat, and blackfly larvae.

  • Targeted Action: Bti only affects the larvae of mosquitoes and a few closely related flies.
  • Safety: They are non-toxic to humans, pets, fish, birds, and beneficial insects like bees or butterflies.

How to Use Effectively:
  • Placement: Place them in any containerized standing water that cannot be drained, such as rain barrels, bird baths, koi ponds, planter saucers, and clogged gutters.
  • Custom Sizing: For smaller areas like a bird bath or single flower pot, the dunks can be broken into halves or quarters.
  • Fungus Gnat Control: You can “steep” a dunk in a watering can overnight to create a “Bti tea” to kill fungus gnat larvae in houseplant soil.
  • The “Mosquito Bucket” Strategy: Create a trap by filling a bucket with water and a handful of organic matter (like grass or straw) to attract egg-laying females, then add a dunk to ensure the resulting larvae die.
