Ferrous Sulphate Moss Killer (iron sulphate) is a highly effective, fast-acting treatment that dehydrates lawn moss, turning it black as it dies. It also acts as an iron supplement to green up surrounding turf. For the best results, use it in cool, damp weather in spring or fall, and avoid applying during hot, dry spells to prevent grass scorch.
How It Works & Application Rates
When applied, the iron creates a toxic environment for the moss cells while helping the grass blades harden against frost and disease.
- Powder Application: Dissolve 10 Tablespoons of soluble ferrous sulphate powder into 1 Gallon of lukewarm water in a sprayer. Spray over Approx. 500 sq feet of Mossy lawn.
What to Expect & Aftercare
- Blackening: Within a few hours to 2 days, your moss will turn dark brown or black. Do not panic; this means the treatment is working.
- Scarification: Wait about 7 to 14 days after the moss turns black. Use a mechanical scarifier or a stiff spring-tine rake to remove the dead, black debris from your lawn.
- Overseeding: Because bare patches are common after moss removal, top-dress the area with high-quality compost or topsoil and apply a fresh grass seed.
Crucial Precautions
- Staining: Ferrous sulphate will permanently stain concrete, paving stones, light-colored brick, and clothing. Always sweep up granules and rinse hard surfaces thoroughly immediately after application.
- Overdosing: Exceeding the recommended dosage can severely scorch your grass.
- Pet Safety: Keep pets off the treated lawn until the liquid has completely dried or the granules have been watered in thoroughly
